What Does 'Ayah' Mean?
"Ayah" (آية) is the Arabic word most directly translated as "verse" in English, but its literal meaning is closer to "sign" or "proof."
Sign, not just sentence
Referring to a Quran verse as an ayah carries the sense that the passage is a sign — something pointing toward a larger truth — rather than simply a numbered line of text.
How ayahs are organized
Each ayah is numbered within its surah (chapter), which is why a verse reference looks like "Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153" — surah name, chapter number, and ayah number.
Ayah beyond the Quran
The word ayah is also used more broadly in Arabic to describe natural phenomena regarded as signs of the divine — the same root concept, applied outside scripture as well.
