What Is a Dua?

A dua (دعاء) is a personal supplication or prayer — an informal, direct form of communication with Allah, distinct from the formally structured five daily prayers.

Personal and flexible

Unlike the fixed structure of formal prayer, a dua can be made in any language, at any time, in any circumstance — asking for guidance, expressing gratitude, or seeking help.

Traditional and spontaneous forms

Many duas are traditional, passed down and recited in specific circumstances (before eating, when traveling), while others are entirely spontaneous, personal words in the moment.

A constant, everyday practice

Because of its flexibility, dua is one of the most frequent and accessible forms of daily religious practice, woven into ordinary moments rather than reserved for formal occasions.

Does a dua have to be in Arabic?

No — while many traditional duas are recited in Arabic, a dua can be made in any language, since its core purpose is direct, personal communication.
